Choose your tour
Pick a half-day tour or combine two into a full day — every tour can be adjusted to your time and interests.
History & Heritage — half day
- Ethnological Museum — in Emperor Haile Selassie's former palace on the university campus: his private rooms kept as they were, including a mirror still marked by a bullet from the 1960 coup attempt, plus treasures from Ethiopia's many peoples.
- National Museum — home of Lucy (Dinkinesh), the famous 3.2-million-year-old fossil skeleton.
- Holy Trinity Cathedral — resting place of Emperor Haile Selassie and Empress Menen, with beautiful stained glass.
- Add on: Unity Park — Menelik II's restored palace, with throne halls, gardens and a zoo.
Entoto Hills — half day
- Drive up through eucalyptus forest to the best views over the capital.
- Entoto Maryam Church, where Emperor Menelik II was crowned, and his first palace from before he founded Addis Ababa.
- On the way down: Shiro Meda market for handwoven traditional clothing and scarves.
Piazza & Merkato — half day
- Adwa Victory Memorial — museum celebrating Ethiopia's 1896 victory over Italy at the Battle of Adwa.
- St George's Cathedral, where Haile Selassie was crowned in 1930.
- Merkato — one of Africa's largest open-air markets: spices, coffee, baskets and silver, plus the Grand Anwar Mosque. Far easier with a guide!
Coffee & Culture — evening
A traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony, then dinner with live music and dancing.
Day trips
- Bishoftu crater lakes — about 1 hour's drive.
- Debre Libanos & the Portuguese Bridge — cliff-edge monastery and gelada monkeys, about 2 hours.
- Tiya stelae (UNESCO World Heritage) — about 2 hours.
- Wenchi crater lake — horse riding and a boat trip, about 3 hours.
Good to know
- Altitude: Addis sits at about 2,350 m. Take your first day easy, drink plenty of water and wear sunscreen.
- Weather: the main rains run from June to September, and mornings and evenings are cool all year — bring a light jacket.
- Churches: cover shoulders and knees; women usually cover their hair, and shoes come off inside.
- Money: carry Ethiopian birr in small notes for markets and small shops — cards are accepted mainly in hotels and larger restaurants.
- Photos: ask before photographing people, and don't photograph military or government buildings.
- Ethiopian time: the local clock starts counting at 6 am, so "2 o'clock" can mean 8 am — always check which time is meant.
- Food: try injera with tibs or shiro. Halal restaurants are easy to find, and on Wednesdays and Fridays there are plenty of delicious vegan "fasting" dishes.
